Monica Lennon MSP shows support for Nelson Mandela statue crowdfunder
Monica has backed plans to erect a statue of Nelson Mandela in Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow to commemorate Glasgow’s historic relationship with Mandela.
The Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation has been raising money throughout October with hopes of obtaining the additional £20,000 needed to design, sculpt and mount the statue.
Glasgow was the first city in the world to award Nelson Mandela freedom in 1981 and came to speak to the people of Glasgow at George Square in 1993.
“The statue will be a great way of remembering Mandela’s legacy and will allow us to reflect on the lessons he taught us throughout his lifetime and struggles.
“The Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation, through their education project, have increased understandings of human rights issues but also of the important historical role Glasgow played in the campaign for Mandela’s release. They have played an important role in educating Scottish people on this issue, and they have my full support on this exciting project”.
The project has gained support from many, including celebrities such as Billy Connolly, who has reflected on Glasgow’s historic relationship with Nelson Mandela.
