Monica Lennon MSP, alongside 40 cross-party MSPs have condemned the Scottish Government’s decision to cut funding to the Scottish Men’s Shed Association following a petition supported by more than 3,600 people.
Men’s sheds, which date back to 2014 allow men to pursue practical interests whilst promoting friendship, sharing and community and with a strong presence across Scotland including Hamilton, Rutherglen, East Kilbride, and Airdrie.
Monica commented “As a society, we need to treat loneliness and isolation with the same severity that we treat other health issues. Many men experience isolation, especially older men who may not have a close support network.
“For almost 10 years, Men’s Sheds have provided a safe space for men to build social connections, share stories and most importantly, feel less alone. Post-coronavirus, this is more important than ever.
“Pulling back funding for this essential service will mount pressure on the dedicated volunteers who have worked tirelessly to support men’s health across Scotland. Social isolation is more prevalent than ever, and we need innovative organisations such as the Men’s Shed to deliver much-needed support to Scottish communities.”
