Council Care Homes Re-Opened To Cope With Coronavirus

South Lanarkshire Council will re-open Kirkton House and McWhirter House to cope with the response to Coronavirus, in addition to 60 beds at Udston Hospital being recommissioned.

It follows a long-running public campaign to save the council-run care homes which had previously been marked for closure.

Welcoming the move, Monica said: “This is a vital and welcome move that will allow crucial hospital beds to be freed up, and help our doctors and nurses to deal with the growing threat of Coronavirus.

I’ve consistently argued that council-run care is vital, and it’s clear Kirkton and McWhirter House, as well as Udston hospital, will have a crucial role to play. I hope it will lead to a step change in how council care is valued and funded in future.

Coronavirus has already completely changed the way we live and view our lives. During this tough time it’s important that we all work together and follow the advice to stay at home, to slow the spread of this virus and save lives.”
